CONGRESS PARK TO CONVERT TO CITY BARREL TRASH COLLECTION
Say goodby to your privately owned barrels and dumpsters.
In correspondence with Charlotte Pittman, Denver Solid Waste, tentative plans for conversion to city owned barrel trash collection shouild start in July 2017, with educational outreach beginning in April 2017. We have been contacted by residents regarding concerns about the elderly trying to navigate the new carts down many stairs to the curb. At this point it looks like if pickup is in the alley it will continue to be in the alley.
It should be noted that the change over is not just for dumpsters, but also resident owned barrels.
Congress Park has a diversity of housing; some using dumpsters and some with owner provided barrels.
Some pickup points are on the street, most in alleys.
As long as the collection remains in the alley I have no problem with the carts. I have a very narrow lot with little access to move the cart from the back to the front. I do not want to keep a trash cart in front of my house!
Good thoughts and thanks for commenting. Have you any ideas about how we can help our senior or less physically able neighbors who might be faced with carts in the front? This is sometimes an obstacle to participating in recycling efforts too.
Yes recycling is also a challenge. On the block where I live there are a lot of cars parked. Many times there is barely space for the purple carts, not sure how we can manage every home having a second cart. When there is snow the problems are even worse. On my block we try to help a couple of the older residents but not sure how this can be managed overall.
I also do have some concern for trash in the street. Often after recycling comes there is paper left behind from carts that were overfilled or from a windy day. I am surprised how many people do not pick this up when retrieving their carts. My concern is now we will have plastic bags and other garbage left behind.
Thanks and we hope others will weigh in. Public Works is scheduled to speak at our next meeting in April. This will begin their outreach to us. It might be a good
opportunity to lobby for more alley pickup of recycling and trash. It may involve more smaller trucks, but this would be a good time to see what it would take
Please keep us informed on the date, time, and location of the meeting where this will be discussed.
Our next meeting is April 19 7:00 in the lunch room of REACH school 940 Fillmore St
