Counterpoint – Editorial – Opposing point of view to the “Return Congress Park’s Collection Bins to the Alleyways”
By James Twark
Here is an opposing point of view to the “Return Congress Park’s Collection Bins to the Alleyways” in the Congress Park News – Winter/Spring 2022:
Today’s 2022 concrete alleys are so much tighter and congested compared to these same alleys that were “designed to fit the neighborhoods at the “turn of the last century”
- In 2022 there are up to 13 communications i.e. “phone” poles placed right in each concrete alleyway.
- Easily damaged wooden fences have been built right up to the concrete alley at practically every house
- If all bin collection services were in the alleyways there could be up to 75+ bins at 3 bins per house with approximately 25 houses per alleyway
- There are usually no flat spaces for collection bins or large item pickup items unless they are sitting right in the concrete alleyway. Therefore, even less room for trucks-no matter what the size of the truck.
Does anyone out there really want to drive a $250,000 garbage truck and try not to hit things in these tight alley spaces ?
- I am sure it is safer and more ecological to keep garbage trucks in the street rather than in alleys damaging fences & garages & poles
- And what about when It snows on bin collection days…do we really want any size garbage trucks in these tight 2022 alleys?
- Also, how about personal injuries to valuable city employees, who are asked to operate in such tight unsafe spaces as a 2022 alley ?
The 2022 alleys are the cleanest they have ever been now with all bins on the front streets
- I personally like a sanitary alley and would not want to go back to the old way with trash bins everywhere
- Large item pickup is the worst idea ever for alleys: trash items are placed in the concrete alleys that are not according to the specifications set by the city such as construction materials which are then never picked up which makes alleys a complete mess and it makes it even harder to drive a truck
As far as heavy black bins for trash that need to be moved to the front street:
- I suggest everyone could get by with the smallest black bins.
- Are you truly taking advantage of the recycling bins and the composts bins properly, if you can’t use the smallest black bin ?
- ·I suggest everyone be truly ecological and very little trash will be placed in a black bin
- And the city has even proposed charging a premium for the larger black bins
I Couldn’t disagree more. The alleys purpose originally and still today was to make our streets cleaner friendlier to our neighbors and allow for services to be out of plain sight. Street pickup forces us all to have to rethink and redesign means to wheel the bins to the street when all the homes have been designed otherwise.
And yes given the recycling schedule, I frequent overfill the large recycling bin.
Sorry but we need to go back to alley pickups!
The alleys worked successfully in year past. Snow was not a huge problem, tight areas not a huge problem, fences not a problem, safety for workers and residents not a problem. This change is a problem. Parking and trash sharing a street, manuvering bins to the curb a problem, trucks trying to avoid cars and car parts a problem.
